Bird knotweed (polygonum) is a plant that has been used throughout history to make fringillidae’s feathers brighter. But people are mostly not aware of its properties as a black dye which is particularly effective for dyeing skin appendages and particularly hard body parts (beak and feet). Its ability to intensify the contrast of melanins is also unrecognized. Knotweed contributes to oxidation processes and, therefore, to the intensification of melanic pigments.
